What is Arts Therapy?
How many times have we found ourselves confused, lost amongst our thoughts trying to find a reasonable explanation for our agitated state of being? Sometimes life just doesn’t seem to make any sense, and we struggle to identify what is going on for us and with the world around us.
An Arts Therapeutic process is a personal exploration that uses creativity and playfulness to learn more about ourselves and what’s most important to us.
My role as an arts therapist is to facilitate and support your process of making sense of your experience using very simple techniques. We may use a number of modalities such as drawing, painting, sculpture, and other expressive art forms. The modalities are adaptable and specific to your needs. Together we will create a safe, non-judgemental setting in which to explore what really matters to you and find better ways forward.
What if I’m not an Artist?
We will use the artwork not to interpret but to learn more about ourselves and the way we function in our everyday life. This will then enable us to make choices that may suit us better and contribute to our well-being overall.
You don’t have to worry about having any artistic skills. In our work together what really counts is the process, and we’re not too concerned with the final creative piece.
Who is it for?
The aims of Arts Therapy include helping individuals reduce anxiety and depression, improve relationships, work through conflicts, emerge from traumatic life experiences, develop a sense of personal agency, regulate emotions, and increase self-reflection and awareness.
I also find that therapeutic arts processes can be very rewarding when we are wanting to connect deeper with our creativity and embark on new creative projects!
